About BCTESOL

The World in our Classrooms

BCTESOL

BC TESOL is a professional organization who strives to:

  • Improve the quality of ELL education in British Columbia
  • Promote a greater awareness of English language learning and the needs of English language learners (ELLs) and ELL educators
  • Stimulate improvement and quality ELL education throughout the province

Serving English Language Learners

Canada ranks in the top 10 in terms of numbers arriving, when it comes to countries that receive immigrants and refugees on an annual basis. BC and, in particular, Vancouver and the urban areas that surround it, receive the second highest numbers of such “new Canadians” in Canada.

One direct result of this is that English as an additional language learners, called English Language Learners or ELLs in BC public schools, are rapidly increasing. In fact, these learners now constitute the majority in most of the larger urban school districts, and their numbers are increasing significantly in more and more areas of the province. It is, therefore, critical that we support these new learners – our future citizens and taxpayers – as effectively as possible.

The executive meets face-to-face 4 times a year. TTOC coverage is available. We occasionally discuss via email or other means during the year as well.

Come learn more at the AGM, which is open to all members at the annual October conference. Consider joining this hard-working group in their efforts to support additional language learners and teachers. We welcome your contributions!
